On the PBS NewsHour segment “Brief But Spectacular” Hospitality House Executive Director Joe Wilson recounts his journey from homelessness to leading the organization that once sheltered him from the streets.
“I do know that a momentary glance, a touch, a smile, any evidence of human warmth, makes a huge difference in people’s lives… I would hope that we could remind ourselves that it is the judgment and harshness in our eyes that really make an imprint on those who have nothing.”
Hospitality House changed the course of my life. Every day, in so many ways, we’re living proof of the power of our own humanity to heal, to uplift, and to transform ourselves and our community. The people who lead our programs look like the people who use our programs.
We believe in each other.
Our celebrated Community Arts Program – the only free of charge arts studio for low-income artists in San Francisco – inspires creativity, supports local artists, and celebrates the power of art as a catalyst for social change.
Our self-help centers connect hundreds of residents every day with health services and housing resources, offer safe spaces for respite and socialization, and build communities of healing.
Our employment program helps hundreds of job seekers with support, training resources, and gainful employment, including on-site hiring events with dozens of employers each year.
Our Community Building Program combines advocacy and housing support, civic engagement, and a unique, trauma-informed healing project to empower resident-led activism.
Our emergency shelter – where I used to sleep many years ago – provides 25-30 homeless men each night with refuge from the streets, and a chance to rebuild their lives, one step at a time.
It’s because of people like you that Hospitality House has thrived as a community institution for more than 50 years. Now, more than ever, we need you.
Thank you for believing in us.
